As an independent film, it was distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It garnered positive reviews and became a «surprise hit», grossing over sixty million dollars in total, exceeding its seven and a half million dollar budget. Many critics called it one of the best films of 2009 and compared it to other films such as Annie Hall (1977) and High Fidelity (2000).[2][3][4][5][5][5][5][6][7][8][8][9][9][9

The film received the Satellite Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay, as well as two nominations for the 2009 Golden Globe Awards in the categories of Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical and Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical (Gordon-Levitt).

Tom shows Summer his favorite spot in the city, from where he can see some of his favorite buildings, although the view is marred by the presence of parking lots. Several months into their relationship, Tom’s friends and his preteen half-sister, Rachel, insist that he question Summer about what kind of relationship they have, but Summer downplays the matter by saying that it doesn’t matter as long as they are both happy. One night, Tom gets into a bar fight with a man who tries to seduce Summer, which causes their first argument. They later reconcile and Summer admits that Tom deserves some certainty, but that she can’t promise further commitments down the road.

Perhaps things would have been easier for Tom if he had thought more with his head than with his heart from the beginning (ah, yes, the classic problem between being blinded by infatuation). As mentioned, Summer wasn’t that far into the relationship, and if Tom had taken off, at least for a moment, the rose-colored glasses, he might have seen those red flags where it was best to leave things alone. We don’t blame him, it’s amazing to feel something as intense as falling in love… but it doesn’t hurt to navigate those turbulent waters carefully.

Tom met Summer in the elevator. Just like that, easy, simple, no dating apps, clubs or anything else. That’s the beauty of ‘500 Days with Her’: it shows us that one day a love story can happen to you when you least (and where you least) expect it. The thing, though, is to go out into the world. Let’s just say that a good job, the love of your life or good luck are not going to come while you’re in bed marathoning your favorite series.

Breaking up with a partner is grief, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Grieving should not only relate to death, as by definition it is the process by which your body and mind will react to a loss. Tom throws himself into alcohol and twinkies, but gradually takes control, even venturing out to find a better job. Not all grief is bad, but we must be responsible for the paths and decisions we take, which may even transform us into a new person.

500 days of summer you make my dreams

Later in the first days of the romance, «There Goes The Fear» by Doves and «Sweet Disposition» by The Temper Trap are listened; in them the enthusiasm, freshness and joy of their incipient idyll is reflected thanks to the sound and lyricism of the melodies. However, what they represent is the transition from Tom Hansen’s melancholic essence to an optimistic one; it will no longer be the nostalgic tone of The Smiths but simple love songs.

But soon his world collapses completely in the moment when reality reduces expectations to silence when he learns that Summer, despite the odds, is engaged; at this I could quote Regina Spektor and say: «No one’s got it all». There is currently a notion that the planet is at our disposal, there are no limits or boundaries; we are the superheroes of history. But the evidence shows the opposite: we do not know how to cope with frustration, failure and disillusionment because of the state of comfort to which we are accustomed. We are neither heroes nor gods, just mortals, and a universal paradigm proves it: no one, absolutely no one has it all.
